Living By The Truth…

2 Timothy 3

READ: 2 Timothy 3

God’s people pay attention to the environment they are living in and clearly discern what is happening around them 1 Thessalonians 5:6 “So then let us not sleep, as others do, but let us keep awake and be sober.” and (see Luke 21:34-36)

- 2 Timothy 3:1-5 - “But understand (ginosko: know) this, that in the last days there (not present in the original text) will come (enistemi: be present, close at hand) times of difficulty. 2 For people will be (used only in the emphatic) lovers of self,(phil-ow-tos: selfish) lovers of money,(phil-ar-goo-ros: greedy) proud, arrogant,(exceedingly proud, conceited) abusive,(blasphemer) disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy,(wicked) 3 heartless,(loveless, no instinct of affection) unappeasable,(unforgiving, unwilling to reconcile) slanderous,(diabolos: devil) without self-control, brutal,(savage) not loving good,(hating good and good people) 4 treacherous,(traitor, betrayer) reckless,(rash, thoughtless) swollen with conceit,(render foolish or stupid with conceit) lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God,(philotheos: loving God) 5 having the appearance of godliness,(mor-fo-sis: looking godly, a faux-christian) but denying its power.(1 Corinthians 1:18) Avoid such people.

God’s people pay close careful attention to the creepers (diabolos) who come to draw the weak in faith away to entice and entrap them.

1 Peter 5:8-9 “Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil (slanderer, culminator) prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. 9 Resist him, (hos: that) firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world.

- 2 Timothy 3:6-9 - “For among them are those who creep into households and capture weak women, burdened with sins and led astray by various passions, 7 always learning and never able to arrive at a knowledge of the truth. 8 Just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so these men (men of verse 6) also oppose the truth, men corrupted in mind (depraved) and disqualified (rejected, refuse) regarding the faith. 9 But they will not get very far, (not advance much) for their folly (senselessness) will be plain to all, as was that of those two men.

God’s people are careful to follow proven godly leaders and are secure in what’s to come knowing Christ will rescue His people.

Romans 5:3-5 “Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.”

- 2 Timothy 3:10-13 - You, however, have followed my teaching, my conduct, (way of life) my aim in life, (purpose) my faith, (trust in Christ) my patience, my love, (active Love of God and His people) my steadfastness, (endurance) 11 my persecutions and sufferings that happened to me at Antioch, at Iconium, and at Lystra—which persecutions I endured; yet from them all the Lord rescued me.12 Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted, 13 while evil people and impostors will go on from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived. (leading astray and lead astray)

God’s people hold firm to sound doctrine which they have learned and tested by scripture alone in Christ alone.  2 Timothy 1:5 “I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and now, I am sure, dwells in you as well.”

- 2 Timothy 3:14-15 - “But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it 15 and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.

God’s people learn, test, reform their ways, and grow in the virtue of doctrine through scripture alone by the Holy Spirit guiding us in all truth to accomplish His purpose and plan.  Ephesians 2:10 “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.”

- 2 Timothy 3:16-17 - All Scripture is breathed out by God (inspired) and profitable for teaching,(did-osk-a-lia: doctrine) for reproof, (el-eng-khos: to test) for correction, (ep-a-nar-tho-sis: reform, restore to a right state) and for training (pie-dia: nurture, educate) in righteousness,(integrity, uprightness, correctness of thinking, feeling and acting in accordance with God and His scripture) 17 that the man of God may be complete, (entirely and thoroughly suited) equipped (furnished and fully skilled) for every good work.(task, deed or charge)
