Lead By Living…
2 Timothy 2
READ: 2 Timothy 2
A genuine Godly Leader obeys the Commander and Chief of the faith, runs the race to gain the prize, and works the field with patience and endurance to receive its fruit at harvest. “Therefore do not throw away your confidence, which has a great reward. 36 For you have need of endurance, so that when you have done the will of God you may receive what is promised..” - Hebrews 10:35-36
- 2 Timothy 2:1-7 - “You then, my child, be strengthened by the grace that is in Christ Jesus, 2 and what you have heard (ak-oo-o: learn from hearing) from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust (to be kept and taught to others) to faithful men, (reliable and trustworthy men) who will be able (hik-an-os: fit, sufficient, competent) to teach others also. 3 Share in suffering (suffer hardship together with another) as a good soldier of Christ Jesus. 4 No soldier (one who leads soldiers to battle) gets entangled in civilian pursuits, (gets involved with issues not related to the kingdom) since his aim is to please the one who enlisted him. 5 An athlete is not crowned unless he competes according to the rules. 6 It is the hard-working farmer who ought to have the first share of the crops. 7 Think over what I say, for the Lord will give you understanding in everything.
Godly leaders are not ashamed of Christ the King and His Gospel - they are willing to suffer for it. “I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.” - Galatians2:20
- 2 Timothy 2:8-13 - “Remember (call to mind, recollect) Jesus Christ, risen from the dead, (risen savior) the offspring of David, (reigning King) as preached in my gospel, 9 for which I am suffering, bound with chains as a criminal. But the word of God is not bound! 10 Therefore I endure everything for the sake of the elect, that they also may obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory. 11 The saying is trustworthy, for: If we have died with Him, we will also live with Him; 12 if we endure, we will also reign with Him; if we deny him, He also will deny us; 13 if we are faithless, He remains faithful— for He cannot deny himself.
Godly Leaders avoid foolish conversations not pertaining to the kingdom and of Christ. “Walk in wisdom toward outsiders, making the best use of the time. 6 Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person. - Colossians 4:5-6
- 2 Timothy 2:14-19 - “Remind them of these things, (previous verses) and charge (earnestly affirm) them before God not to quarrel about words,(dispute about trivial things) which does no good, but only ruins (kata-stroph-ay: to subvert, overthrow, destroy) the hearers. 15 Do your best (spoo-dadzo: hasten, exert one’s self) to present yourself to God as one approved, (dok-ay-mos: approved by testing, tried and genuine) a worker (doer, laborer, practicer) who has no need to be ashamed,(no cause or has done nothing to be ashamed) rightly handling (to make straight and smooth) the word of truth. 16 But avoid irreverent babble, (reference verse 4 & 14) for it will lead people into more and more (pol-oos: much) ungodliness, 17 and their talk will spread like gangrene. (motification) Among them are Hymenaeus and Philetus, 18 who have swerved from the truth, saying that the resurrection has already happened. They are upsetting the faith of some. 19 But God's firm foundation stands, bearing this seal: “The Lord knows those who are his,” and, “Let everyone who names the name of the Lord depart from iniquity.”
Godly Leaders must maintain a Holy and Faithful life, to be useful and usable. “Now if anyone builds on the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw— 13 each one's work will become manifest, for the Day will disclose it, because it will be revealed by fire, and the fire will test what sort of work each one has done. 14 If the work that anyone has built on the foundation survives, he will receive a reward. 15 If anyone's work is burned up, he will suffer loss, though he himself will be saved, but only as through fire.” - 1 Corinthians 3:12-15
- 2 Timothy 2:20-21 - “Now in a great house (God’s Family, House) there are not only vessels of gold and silver but also of wood and clay, some for honorable (usable) use, some for dishonorable. (unusable) 21 Therefore, if anyone (tis: certain one) cleanses (clean thoroughly, purify, clean out) himself from what is dishonorable, (this or that, sin) he will be a vessel for honorable use, (usable or valuable object) set apart as holy, (set apart from profane things, dedicated for God’s use) useful to the master of the house, ready for every good work.
Godly Leaders grow and develop in Loving: God, His Word, His Ways, and His Things. “Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, 16 making the best use of the time, because the days are evil. 17 Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.” - Ephesians 5:15-17
- 2 Timothy 2:22-26 - “So flee youthful passions (ep-ee-thoo-mee-ah: forbidden desires, cravings, lusts) and pursue (dee-o-ko: earnestly endeavor to acquire, seek with all your heart) righteousness, faith, love, and peace, along with those who call on the Lord (with the true family of God) from a pure heart. 23 Have nothing to do with foolish, ignorant controversies; you know that they breed quarrels. 24 And the Lord's servant must not be quarrelsome (war with words) but kind to everyone, able to teach, patiently enduring evil, (patient of ills and wrongs) 25 correcting (castigate, moulding the character of others by reproof and admonition) his opponents with gentleness. God may perhaps grant (give)them repentance (one brought to repentance a change of mind) leading to a knowledge of the truth, (faith and truth which was given through the partaking of faith) 26 and they may come to their senses and escape from the snare of the devil, (deception, trap, noose brought by false accuser, calumniator, slanderer ) after being captured (caught) by him to do his will. (what has been determined or to do the same things)
