The King’s Comings - Matthew 21 & Revelation 19

The King’s Comings

First Coming - The Humble King

Second Coming - The Just King

Matthew 21 & Revelation 19

READ: Matthew 21:1-10

Things to take notice:

  1. - Matthew Henry writes, “The provision that was made for this dignified rite or royal ceremony was very poor and ordinary, and such as bespoke his kingdom to be not of this world. There were no heralds at arms provided, no trumpet sounded before him, no chariots of state, no royal guards in procession attire; such things as these were not agreeable to his present state of humiliation, but will be far outdone at his second coming, to which his magnificent appearance is reserved, when the last trumpet shall sound, the glorious angels shall be his heralds and attendants, and the clouds his chariots. But in this public appearance,...”
  2. Why a Donkey and a Colt?

- To fulfill what was written in Zechariah 9:9 “Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you; righteous and having salvation is he, humble and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.

- To show He alone is King who has come to judge sin. Like the Judges of Isreal in Judges 5:10, “Tell of it, you who ride on white donkeys, you who sit on rich carpets and you who walk by the way.” and like the sons of the Judges in; Judges 12:13-14, “After him Abdon the son of Hillel the Pirathonite judged Israel. 14 He had forty sons and thirty grandsons, who rode on seventy colts, and he judged Israel eight years.”

The King of Israel, the Son of God, comes riding a donkey (humble king) and her colt (beast of burden), not as conqueror but as Humble King to judge sin and give His life as a ransom for many.

The King and His Donkey

The First Coming - The Humble King

Matthew 21:4-7 -This took place to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet, saying, 5 “Say to the daughter of Zion ‘Behold, your king is coming to you, humble, and mounted on a donkey, on a colt,(young donkey) the foal (son) of a beast of burden.’ 6 The disciples went and did as Jesus had directed them. 7 They brought the donkey and the colt and put on them their cloaks, and He sat on them.”

How Should You Respond to The Humble King?

The People's Response to The Humble King

Matthew 21:8-11 - 8 Most of the crowd spread their cloaks on the road, and others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. 9 And the crowds that went before Him and that followed Him were shouting, “Hosanna (yasha na: save us, we pray) to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!” 10 And when He entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred up, saying, “Who is this?” 11 And the crowds said, “This is the prophet Jesus, from Nazareth of Galilee.”

  • He came not as a conquering king but as the King who gave His life for His people, not in war but to set the captives free, not in wrath but to bring peace, not with an army but alone and abandoned by His friends. BUT…

The King and His Horse

The Second Coming - The Just King

Revelation 19:11 - “Then I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse! The One sitting on it is called Faithful and True, (that which by nature corresponds to and has the name, the genuine, real and true) and in righteousness (justice, virtue that gives each one their due) He judges (summoned to trial that one’s case is exaimed and judgement is passed) and makes war.”

The Just King reigns

Revelation 19:12-16 - His eyes are like a flame of fire, and on His head are many diadems, and He has a name written that no one knows but himself. 13 He is clothed in a robe dipped in blood, and the name by which He is called is The Word of God. 14 And the armies of heaven, arrayed in fine linen, white and pure, were following him on white horses. 15 From His mouth comes a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations, and He will rule them with a rod of iron. He will tread the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God the Almighty. 16 On His robe and on His thigh he has a name written, King of kings and Lord of lords.”

  • When He comes again, He comes as a conquering King and righteous judge, waging war and judging the nations, pouring out His wrath, He comes with armies, not alone but with merieds upon merieds all riding white horses. WHY? Because The Lamb of God is KING of kings and LORD of lords!
